We sent the Bubble down at four a.m., allowing for a noisy sendoff. We did not usually engage in such revelry; however, this sphere was the first run with real humans, though it would not be the last. If they succeeded, we would be able to explore the deepest corners of the ocean in a safe environment.
It took one a moment to notice the clear craft against a background of dark sky and sea, the most noticeable portions the organs of the cockpit. Inside, we used a small robot to monitor pressure, oxygen content, and strength of the walls during the trip.

My mother only hit me once when I was a child, and even then, the hand on my cheek was weak, cold, and soft with the feel of new paper, blue-green veins pulsed against the surface of her skin. I had only told her she wasn’t going to die--wasn’t allowed to. She hit me then, told me I was a spoiled, conceited child, and died a week later. It must have been the quiet I fell into that made Kimmi hold my hand for those next seven days, or maybe she was scared, too.
